Kloofendal Municipal Nature Reserve is a cultural heritage and ecotourism facility in the Roodepoort suburb of Kloofendal. The 128ha park was one of the first nature reserves in Joburg and offers urbanites a retreat from city life. The area has a high conservation value, with the natural environment representing a transition zone between the Bankenveld, Drakensberg and Savana ecosystems.
Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden was founded in 1982, but has been a popular venue for outings since the 1800’s. The natural vegetation of the area is known as the ‘Rocky Highveld Grassland’ and consists of a mosaic of grassland and savanna, with dense bush in kloofs and along streams. The variety of habitats accommodates over 600 naturally occurring plant species.
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is the largest proclaimed nature reserve in the Johannesburg Metropolitan area (Over 700 ha. in extent) and boasts a surprising diversity ranging from larger game such as zebra, red hartebeest, and black wildebeest, to many items of botanical, geological, archaeological, historical and cultural interest. Red data listed and other protected species are also to be found.
